Data analysis has had the same shape for twenty years. Collect data. Build a dashboard. Wait for someone to notice something. The tools got prettier — Tableau replaced Excel, Looker replaced Tableau — but the fundamental loop hasn't changed. Data sits in a warehouse until a human queries it.

There are three levels, and most tools stop at two

Level 1: Ask in English, get SQL results. "What was churn by cohort last month?" → translated to a query → results returned. Useful. Table stakes in 2026. But it's just translating — the AI isn't analyzing anything.

Level 2: The system spots anomalies. "Unusual spike in checkout abandonment on mobile in the last 6 hours." Proactive detection. This is where most "AI analytics" products stop. They're good at noticing that something changed. They're bad at telling you why.

Level 3: The agent investigates. It doesn't just flag the spike. It queries your deployment logs to see if a release correlated. Searches the live web for known issues with your tech stack. Checks GitHub issues and community channels for similar reports. Cross-references everything. Delivers a finding.

Level 3 is the one that changes how teams work. It's also the one that requires an agent with access to multiple capabilities — not just a database connector with an LLM wrapper.


What this looks like at 2 AM

Error rate spikes at 2 AM. Traditional response: an alert fires, someone on call checks a dashboard, starts digging through logs, searches for known issues, maybe posts in a Slack channel. 30-90 minutes of investigation before the first useful finding.

The on-call engineer wakes up to a report, not a raw alert. Investigation already done. Likely cause identified. External context gathered. Recommended action included.


What you actually need to build this

A reasoning model. Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro — any frontier model can plan an investigation. The model isn't the bottleneck.

Data connectors. SQL access to your warehouse. API access to your deployment logs. This part most teams already have.

Capability access beyond your data. This is where most analytics agents hit a wall. An agent that can query your database is a smart BI tool. An agent that can also search the live web for context, process call recordings, and generate structured reports — that's an analyst.

The infrastructure challenge isn't finding these capabilities. It's giving your agent access to all of them without stitching together five separate APIs, each with its own auth, rate limits, and response format.
